Cobram’s Country Women’s Association Nocturnal Branch celebrated its first birthday recently, after a busy year working for the community, learning new skills and forming new friendships.
Branch president Helen Christie said they had been busy, not just “making tea and scones” as people might expect.
“CWA has an agriculture committee, supports people on social issues, offers all types of hand crafts, catering, cooking, public speaking, performing arts, student scholarships plus personal development,” she said.
“People think we just sit in the corner and knit, which is very far from the truth.”
Cobram’s Nocturnal Branch has 12 members, including an eight and 10-year-old, as well as older members aged up to 80.
Mrs Christie , who has been a CWA member since 1967, said the aims were to foster women, children and families, while working within the community to provide funds for droughts, floods and fires.
“Last year saw large financial assistance distributed for drought relief which is ongoing and has benefited this area,” she said.
“This assistance will continue both financially and in hand assisting victims of the horrendous fires in our area.”
Founded in 1928 to help support women in the Mallee and Wimmera battling loneliness and hardship, CWA of Victoria is alive and flourishing in rural and metropolitan areas, boasting 330 branches.
Mrs Christie said the branch welcomed anyone of any age regardless of their political, cultural or religious views.
“We started it and we’re proud to the success that’s coming forward,” she said.
“It’s growing and will continue to be successful.”
Cobram CWA Nocturnal Branch is hosting high tea at Uniting Church Hall on Saturday, February 29, from 1 pm to 4 pm, supported by Moira Shire Council.
Mrs Christie is said anyone is welcome to attend and tickets are $30.
To book, phone Mrs Christie on 0409 196 439 by Friday, February 21.
